1814 – August 24

Doctor of Medicine Arcangelo Pullicino, of Zebbug, married Sigra. Maria Schembri, of Valletta. They were joined in marriage by Don Filippo Pullicino, brother of the groom, in the house chapel. Sigra. Marianna Schembri was the only daughter of Dr Giovanni Schembri, former Assessor for Monsignor Mattei Bishop of Malta.

1815 – August 15

At 8 in the morning Sigra. Marianna Pullicino gave birth* to a son. He was baptized the next day, in the Church of Porto Salvo in Valletta. The godparents were Dr Gabriele Pullicino, grandfather, and Sig. Maria Pullicino, aunt of the baby boy. He was given the names Paolo, Antonio, Giovanni Maria, Filippo, Rocco and Gabriele. He kept the name Paolo. He was fortunate to be born on the day and hour dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

1817 – March 7

At 7 in the evening Sigra. Marianna Pullicino gave birth to a second son. He was baptized the next day by the Parish Priest in the Church of Porto Salvo in Valletta. The god parents were Assessor Dr Giovanni Schembri, grandfather, and Sig. Dionisia Pullicino, aunt of the baby boy. He was given the names Antonio, Giovanni, Dionisio, Rosario, Tommaso. He kept the name Antonio.

1819 – July 12

At midday Sigra Marianna Pullicino gave birth to a baby girl, who was baptized the next day by the Parish Priest in the Church of Porto Salvo in Valletta. The godparents were Sigra Maria Antonia Magri sister-in-law of Assessor Schembri, and the Priest Don Filippo Pullicino uncle of the offspring.* She was given the names Maria, Antonia, Caterina, Giovanna, Concetta e Rosaria.

1820 – March 10

Died; at home in Valletta Assessore Dr Giovanni Schembri, and he was buried in the parish Church at Micabiba. He was not of advanced age. He died having pursued an illustrious career, both as a judge at Notabile, and as Assessor for Bishop Monsignor Mattei.

1820 – October 4

Died; at Zebbug Dr Gabriele Pullicino, father of Dr Arcangelo of a major frailty, at a very advanced age*, at eight in the morning. He was buried in the parish Church at Zebbug, in the Chapel of the Holy Rosary.**

1820 – November 22

Died; at Zebbug of a major frailty Sig. Dionisia Pullicino, sister of Dr Arcangelo, at a rather young age* at half past six in the morning. She was buried in the Church at Zebbug. [*aged 42, having been born on 9 October 1778]

1822 – March 18

At midday Sigra Marianna Pullicino gave birth to a baby girl. She was baptized the next day in the Church of Porto Salvo in Valletta. The godparents were Sig. Maria Pullicino, aunt of the baby girl, and Sig. Michelangelo Gauci, uncle of the mother. The offspring was given the names Concetta, Michelina, Giovanna, Caterina. However she kept the name Giovanna, in consideration of the name of Assessor Dr Giovanni, her maternal grandfather.

1824 – September 16

Sig. Marianna Pullicino gave birth to a baby boy at one in the morning, who was baptized that same day in the Church of Porto Salvo by Parish Priest Portelli. The godparents were the priest Don Vincenzo Gauci uncle of the mother, and Sig. Maria Pullicino aunt of the baby boy. He was given the names Filippo, Paolo, Nicolo, Vincenzo. He kept the name Filippo.

1827 – May 10

Sigra Marianna Pullicino at the hour of ten in the evening gave birth to a baby boy. He was baptized the next day in the Church of Porto Salvo. The godparents were Sig. Maria Pullicino, aunt of the offspring and Paolo Pullicino, eldest brother of the same child. He was given the names Giuseppe, Gabriele, Luigi, Paolo, Francesco, Rosario. This child died of diarrhoea, 23 May of the following year 1828

1829 – October 5

Sig. Marianna Pullicino gave birth to a baby boy at the hour of three during the night. He was baptized the same day. The godparents were Father Dr Filippo Pullicino, uncle of the offspring, and Sig. Anna Montebello. He was given the names Giuseppe, Rosario, Francesco e Paolo.

1831 – April 1

On Good Friday, towards midday, after a short illness of about eight days, Sig. Marianna Pullicino died at the tender age of only 37 years. The next day, with the accompaniment of the Chapter, her body was carried to the Church of San Paolo Naufragi in Valletta, where she was interred in the family crypt, posta nella cappella di San Gaetano. Sig. Marianna Pullicino, born Schembri, had been a woman endowed with great gifts of spirit and body. She was possessed of great moral virtue; endowed with great serenity and devotion; most diligent with the proper education of her children. She further distinguished herself to an extraordinary degree by her abilities in the musical arts, and in playing the piano. She was unique in Malta in her time . She studied music under the direction of Maestro Fr. Azzopardi : to her and her alone did he teach such artistry, and when dying it was to her that he bequeathed all his original compositions of lay music. [here the diarist is recording the death of his mother with obvious tenderness – *“il quale a niun’altra che a lei tale arte avea fatto apprendere, ed a lei morendo legato avea tutte le sue originali composizzioni di musica non ecclesiastica.”]

1832 – July 30

Died; towards evening tragically swimming at Pieta’* the priest Don Filippo Pullicino at the age of about 60 years. He had studied in Rome under Arbusti. Up till the re-opening of the University of Studies in Valletta he occupied the Dean’s Chair in Canon Law. He was buried in the crypt of the Parish Church at Zebbug, in the row of tombs at the side of the altar of San Filippo, in the one directly on the right of the central tomb: where had been previously buried his great uncles Don Giuseppe e Don Pietro Paolo.

[* Msida] [are these paras in the wrong spot? .jjp] The mother of Assessor Dr Giovanni Schembri was Sig. Maria wife of Dr Andrea Schembri. Sig Maria had had a daughter besides the said Assessor, named Teresa, who died without marrying. She and her mother are buried in the Church of San Francesco in Valletta. The Assessor Dr Giovanni Schembri had as his wife Sig Concetta Gauci of Birchicara, who died young. Besides the daughter given in marriage to Dr Arcangelo Pullicino, he also had a son, named Andrea, who died at a young age.

1837 – August 8

Died; towards evening, in an attack of Cholera, after a very short illness, Sig. Maria Pullicino, elder sister of Arcangelo Pullicino at the age of about 67 years. She died at home in Micabiba, to where she had withdrawn, as in Zebbug there was widespread illness. She was buried in the ancient church of San Basilico in the said village of Micabiba, Grave No.19. She had led a holy life, giving much charity to the poor of Zebbug. She underwent her final painful illness with complete resignation, and dying as if in sweet repose was laid to rest.

1839 – March 16

Ordained priest by Monsignor Caruana in his private chapel, Don Paolo, eldest son of Dr Arcangelo Pullicino. He was the sole ordination carried out by the Bishop on the Saturday before Passion Sunday. He celebrated his first Mass the following day in the Parish Church at Zebbug.

1850 – July 1

Made Principal Director of all the primary schools in Malta and Gozo, the Priest Paolo, son of Dr Arcangelo Pullicino; after a journey of about a year of the same* in Ireland and on the Continent.

1852 – June 6

Died; in Birchirchara, after a short illness, at the age of about 65 years, the Priest Don Vincenzo Gauci, maternal uncle of Sig. Marianna wife Dr Arcangelo Pullicino and brother of Sig. Concetta wife of Assessor Dr Giovanni Schembri, father of the said Sig. Marianna Pullicino.

1856 – August 26

Married in the Oratorio of the Chiesa del Carmine in Valletta Dr Filippo son of Dr Arcangelo Pullicino and Sig. Carmela daughter of Dr Michele Parnis. Hearing their vows, Fr Salvatore Parnis, parish priest of Casal Lia, and uncle of the bride, and celebrating the Nuptial Mass Fr Paolo Pullicino, brother of the groom. The witnesses were Chief Justice Bonavita, and the Consul of Naples Cavaliere Ramirez.

1857 – July 17

Born; a first son to Dr Filippo and Sig. Carmela Pullicino at the hour of 4.30 in the morning. July 18 – The said child was baptized in the Church of Porto Salvo in Valletta; the godparents were Fr Paolo Pullicino brother of Dr Filippo; and Sig. Francesca Parnis mother of Sig. Carmela. The child was given the names of Giovanni, Paolo, Rosario e Luigi. He was baptized by the parish priest of the said parish.

1857 – October

Dr Filippo Pullicino was appointed Assessor* for the new Bishop of Malta, Monsignor Pace (Forno).

1861 – January 5

Born; a second son to Dr Filippo and Sig. Carmela Pullicino, at the hour of 6.30 in the morning.

1861 – January 6

The said child was baptized in the Chapel of the Archbishop’s Palace of Monsignor Pace (Forno). The godparents were the Consul of Naples Cavaliere Guis. Ramirez and Sig. Giovanna Speranza, sister of Sig. Carmela Pullicino. The child was given the names Paolo, Gaetano.

1862 – January 4

Died; at his home in Valletta, after an internal illness, at 10.30 in the morning, with all the comforts of theVigil, in the peace of The Lord, Dr Arcangelo Pullicino, at the age of 82 years. The body was taken the next day to the Church of San Paolo in Valletta, where it came to be buried in the same tomb, in the Chapel of San Gaetano, where his wife Sig. Marianna had been buried. He was a man endowed with the highest virtues not often found in others.

1863 – October 23

Born; a third son to Assessor Dr Filippo Pullicino, and Sig. Carmela his wife, at about midday.

1863 – October 25

The said child was baptized in the Parish Church of Porto Salvo, by delegation, by Can. Paolo Pullicino, brother of the father. He was given the names Giuseppe, Arcangelo, Antonio, Salvatore. The godparents were Antonio Pullicino, brother of the father, and Sig. Marianna widow England, born Parnis, aunt of the mother.

1864 – June 16

Dr Don Paolo Pullicino, having been Assistant to Can. Don Wenceslao Debono since 26 April 1862 now assumed possession of the Cathedral Church. The Diocese administered by Debono known as “la Ghar Barca”, was divided into two parts, with Pullicino taking possession of the part to be known as “La Ghar Barca prima”. His possession of the Diocese was moved by Archdeacon and “Vicario Generale” Dr Don Filippo Amato in the presence of witnesses Dr Giuseppe di Marchese Delicata and Dr Luigi Spiteri Agius Bonnici.

1865 – February 5

Died; at her residence in Valletta, No.134 Strada Vescovo*, after a long illness, assisted with all the comforts of the Vigil, Maria Pullicino, daughter of Dr Arcangelo, and she came to be buried in the Church of San Paolo Naufrago, in the family vault, established for all his relatives by Don Domenico Fenech, where her parents Dr Arcangelo Pullicino e Marianna Schembri also rested in the peace of The Lord. She died at the age of 46 years at the hour of 8.15 in the evening.

1865 – August 16

Died; of Cholera, after a twenty seven hour illness in Sliema, Paolino son of Dr Filippo Pullicino. He was aged four and a hlaf years. He died at the hour of eleven in the evening. A few hours beforehand he received the Sacrament of Confirmation from Monsignor Pace (Forno). He came to be buried the following day in the new cemetery of ……(illegible)….. * for all the deaths from Cholera.

1865 – November 2

On the eve of this day dedicated to the faithful departed*, Giuseppe, third son of Dr Filippo Pullicino lay dying from a fierce convulsion. At the tenth hour, that night, Monsignor Bishop Pace (Forno) was brought to the house where he lay ill, to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation in the presence of his godfather Dr G. Borg. Special care and medical assistance provided by the said Dr Borg, aided by some miraculous divine intervention, managed to breathe new life into the child within a few hours. [*All Souls Day]

1866 – January 2

Towards the hour of half past ten in the morning ……(illegible)….. of a baby girl, Carmela, wife of Assessor Dr Filippo Pullicino. The next day, 3rd of the same month, the child was baptized in the Church of Porto Salvo in Valletta by the Parish Priest of the said parish. The godparents were Dr Rolando Speranza, and Sig. Paolina Parnis, sister of the child’s mother. She was given the names Marianna, Paolina, Vincenza.

1867 – December 18

Born; towards the hour of eight in the evening another child to Assessor Dr Filippo and his wife Carmela Pullicino.

1867 – December 20

The aforementioned newborn baby girl was baptized in the Parish Church of Porto Salvo inValletta, by Monsignor Vicario Don Vincenzo Gulia. She was given the name Paolina. The godparents were Sig. Carmelo Gauci (Forno) nephew of Monsignor Bishop Pace (Forno), and his wife Sig. Marianna daughter of Judge Dr Satariano.

1868 -January 8

The little Paolina, daughter of Dr Filippo Pullicino born during December, finding herself in danger of death received the Sacrament of Confirmation from da Monsignor Bishop Dr Gaetano Pace (Forno), acting as godmother was Sig. Marianna England, born Parnis, paternal aunt of the mother of the child.

1869 – September 19

Died; at the hour of 8.45 in the evening, from a long dental disorder* and diarrhoea, the little Paolina daughter of Dr Filippo Pullicino. She died at San Giuliano and came to be buried the next day in the Church of San Paolo Naufrago in Valletta.

1870 – March 14

Born; towards evening another baby girl to Assessor Dr Filippo Pullicino and his wife Carmela.

1870 – March 16

The aforementioned newborn baby girl was baptized this day in the Parish Church of San Domenico. The godparents were Lawyer Dr Alessandro Chappelle, and his wife Locarda. The child was given the names Giulia, Maria, Paolina and Elena.

1872 – July 14 – Sunday Died; at the hour of 3 p.m. after three days ill with menengitis, Marianna daughter of Assessor Dr Filippo Pullicino at the age of six completed years. She was a very lovable girl. Her loss was greatly felt in the family. The next day she was taken to Micabiba to be buried in the Parish Church in the family plot* of Assessor Schembri.

1873 – January 4

Dr Filippo Pullicino moved from the office of Assessor for the Bishop to that of His Majesty’s Judge Judges. He received this day the letter of appointment. In a remarkable coincidence, he received this nomination on the same day on which, eleven years before, his father had died.* With this nomination he occupied the seat of Judge left vacant by the death of Judge Dr Ignatio Schembri.**

1873 – December 29 – Monday

Judge Filippo Pullicino towards evening, was given another daughter by his wife Carmela. She was born ib good health and was left to be baptized after some days.

1874 – January 1 – Thursday

The newborn daughter of Judge Pullicino was baptized this day in the Parish Church of San Dominico in Valletta. She was given the names Maria, Emmanula. She was taken to her Baptism by her wonderful godparents Judge Dr Lorenzo Xuereb, and his wife Sig. Pasqua.

1876 – January 18

Died; this day Dr Antonio Pullicino in the peace of The Lord, fortified with all the comforts of our most Illustrious Religion* at his residence in Valletta, at the age of 59 years. An illness of cerebral haemorrhage had manifested itself in May of 1875, and now appeared to affect his heart, and which in less than three days placed him in his coffin. From there his mortal remains were taken, on the morning of the 20th with a grand following of friends, to the Parish Church of Micabiba, where the funeral took place, and he was laid to rest in the afternoon, buried under the Church of Gius. Padronato della B.V. dei dolori.** May his sweet soul rest in peace.

1877 – July 28

Today was conferred the degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence in the Church of Gesu’ in Valletta, on Giovanni Pullicino, eldest son of Judge Dr Filippo Pullicino, at the age of 20 years, after having completed his Law course at the University in Valletta with high distinction.

1878 – June 5

After about a year of practice, Dr Giovanni Pullicino, took his examination in the presence of the Judges, today received his Advocate’s Warrant and took the prescribed oath with which he became qualified to carry on the legal profession.

1880 – June

Can. Pullicino, obtained his retirement from the Government as Principal Director of Primary Schools / by reason of the removal of that office / he was awarded, as a pension, the allowance of his entire salary – namely 200 (Stg) yearly.*

[*It was unusual for any one to be given a Crown pension, however, given Don Paolo’s contribution to the standardisation of the education system in Malta and his high profile, it is not surprising. He travelled widely and wrote in various languages and had some of his contributions published in the London Illustrated Magazine. He enjoyed good standing with both the Civil and Church leaders, at a time when the Matrimonial Question was raging in Malta.]

1881 – September

Advocate Dr Giovanni Pullicino was appointed by the Government as Professor of Civil and Canon Law, at the public University with a yearly allowance of 160 (Stg).

1881 – December 23

Can. Don Paolo Pullicino was nominated and appointed by His Holiness Pope Leo XIII as prelate of the Collegio dei Protonotarii Apostolici ad instar participantium. The news, by telegram, arrived unexpectedly from Rome and reached Can. Pullicino the evening of 25 December.

1882 – January 11

This day the Apostolic Brief was despatched from the Secretary of Papal Briefs, undersigned by Cardinal Mertel with which Can. Don Paolo Pullicino was nominated by His Holiness, as Protonotaio Apostolico ad instar. 1882 – October 6

Died; at the hour of 9 in the evening, in Valletta, Giuseppe son of Judge Dr Filippo Pullicino, born in October of 1863. He died fortified by the Sacraments from a convulsive attack lasting about 21 hours. At 8 in the morning the body was taken to Micabiba, where the funeral took place, and was buried in the sepoltura gentilisia* of the Parish Church.

1885 – February 11

Today in the Oratorio of San Giovanni in Valletta, the marriage was celebrated of Dr Giovanni son of Judge Dr Filippo Pullicino to Sig. Giorgina, daughter of Advocate Dr Pasquale Mifsud.

1885 – August 10

Returned to Malta from the Collegio delle Suore del Sacro Cuore at Trinita’ di Monti in Rome, Giulia, daughter of Judge Dr Filippo Pullicino, after six years education in that noble Institution. She had taken her place there in October of 1879.

1885 – November 22

Sig. Giorgina wife of Advocate Dr Giovanni Pullicino, had a son. He was baptized in the Parish of San Paolo Naufrago in Valletta. He was given the name Filippo. The godparents were Sig. Carmela Pullicino mother of Advocate Pullicino, and Advocate Pasquale Mifsud father of Sig. Giorgina.

1887 – January 25

Died; in Valletta Judge Dr Filippo Pullicino after a heart disease of two years and a few months, having fallen ill in April of1885. He died this day in the evening at the hour of 6.30. He died with the comfort of all the Sacraments. He was a Judge of the highest integrity and who explained much doctrine in his decisions. He was always known to have acted with fairness in all matters and was respected by all.

1887 – January 27

The mortal remains of the deceased Judge Pullicino were taken today after midday to the Chiesa Arcipretale of Zebbug and placed in the Nobles’ Crypt, place marked No. 63, in the small Chapel dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory.

Can. Paolo Pullicino was nominated by the Government as Member of the New Senate, made up of the Divisione of the University of Malta.

1888 – May 2

Sig. Giorgina wife of Advocate Dr Giovanni Pullicino had a daughter. She was baptized on the 5th of the same month in the Parish of San Paolo in Valletta. She was baptized by Can. Paolo Pullicino, uncle of the father. The godparents were the Marquis Emmanuele Testaferrata, and his sister Eugenia. The child was given the names Maria, Beatrice, Carmela, Anna, Paoloa and Eugenia.

1889 – February 7

Died; at one in the morning the little child Maria Beatrice, daughter of Advocate Dr Giov. Pullicino and his wife Sig. Giorgina, at 9 months of age, born on may 2 1888. On the morning of the 8th she was taken to the Addolorata cemetery and buried in her own grave, East Division, Section S, compartment K.W.1.


(The entries of Don Paolo Pullicino ends here, and the handwriting in the diary changes here – it is continued by either Filippo (i.e. Sir Philip Pullicino) son of Judge Giovanni, or by his own first born Avv. John Pullicino, born 1912, who certainly made the entries beyond the death of his father . There is no indication in the diary.)

  • Camilla Fortunato Olimpia (Lina) born 8 October 1895. The godparents were Dr Oreste Grech Mifsud and Sig. Luisa Pullicino.

Beatrice and Maria died in infancy, the former at the age of nine months on 7 February 1889, and the latter at the age of …… years …… Alfredo died unmarried at the age of 27 years and ten months on 6 November 1918 R.I.P.

1911 – 22 February (Sliema)

Dr Filippo Pullicino son of Judge Dr Giovanni was joined in marriage with Signorina Maude (Matilde) daughter of retired Colonel Achille Samut C.M.G.* and Signora Enrichette Tagliaferro.

[*Achille Samut was stationed in England after serving in the Boer Wars. With the 1921 Constitution, he became a member of the Senate and represented Malta at the Commonwealth Parliamentary meeting in 1926 in Australia and at the opening of the Australian Federal Parliament in Canberra.]

1912 – 27 June

At the hour of 4 a.m. Matilde (Maude) wife of Dr Filippo Pullicino gave birth to a baby boy who was given the names of Giovanni (with regard to the name of his grandfather) Federico, Achille, Giorgio, Filippo. He was brought to the font by Judge Dr Giovanni Pullicino, grandfather of the child and Sig. Enrichetta Samut his maternal grandmother.

1914 – 18 April

At the hour of 12 midday the said Matilde Pullicino gave birth to a baby girl who was given the name of Maria*. The godparents were Signora Giorgina Pullicino mother of the father of the child and Colonel Achille Samut. She was baptized in the Parish Church of Stella Maris.

[*This child is known as “Maryrose” throughout her life.]

1915 – 27 August

At the hour of 7 in the morning, Matilde (Maude) wife of Dr Filippo Pullicino gave birth to a baby boy who was given the name of Filippo* ; the godparents were Signor Alfredo Pullicino brother of Dr Filippo and Signora Mary, wife of Dr Edgar Ferro and sister of the mother. He was baptized in the Parish Church of Stella Maris, Sliema. [*This child is known as “Philo” throughout his life.]

1917 – 14 March (Wednesday)

At the hour of 8 in the evening Matilde (Maude) wife of Dr Filippo Pullicino gave birth to a baby boy who was given the names of Antonio*, Alfredo, Giuseppe, Arcangelo. He was taken to Baptism by Monsignor Dr Can. Cap. Don Alfredo Mifsud, maternal uncle of Dr Filippo and Sig. Lina Samut sister of the mother. He was baptized in the Parish Church of Stella Maris, Sliema. [* This child is known as “Tony” throughout his life.]

1918 – 12 October

Matilde, wife of Dr Filippo Pullicino gave birth to a baby boy at the hour of 7 in the morning. He was baptized in the Parish Church of Stella Maris, Sliema. The godparents were Dr Edgar Ferro and Sig. Emma Pullicino, paternal aunt of the child who was given the names of Francesco, Talbot*, Bernardo, Enrico, Vittorio, Amadeo.

[*This is “Francis”. The name “Talbot” is in memory of the USS Talbot which saved Achille Samut from some days at sea after a German torpedo sank the ship he was on in 1917.]

1918 – 6 November

Alfredo Giovanni, son of Judge Dr Giovanni Pullicino died, unmarried, in San Giuliano (Blue Sisters Home) at the hour of 9.30 a.m. after a long illness supported by Christian resignation. He was buried the following day at the Addolorata Cemetery.

1919 – 3 February

At the hour of about 6.30, Judge Dr Giovanni Pullicino began to feel increasingly unwell, having been struck by an apoplectic attack. He was given the holy Sacraments at the hour of 1.40 on 4 February and passed away.* He was a Judge of the highest integrity, and honest, and excelled at the doctrine and understanding of legal science. He held the office of Acting President of His Majesty’s Court of Appeal and was respected by all the citizens who admired his doctrine, his honesty and his humility. The funeral took place the next day with a procession of representatives of all the citizenry, with His Excellency the Governor at the head. “His family residence No. 66 Strada San Paolo; most establishments displayed a crepe sash across their doors. 1937 On 2 September Dr Giovanni Pullicino son of Judge Sir Filippo Pullicino was joined in marriage with Maria daughter of Sig. Raffaele Bonnello and Sig. Emmanuela Degiorgio (Chiesa del Carmina in Notabile).

1938 – 3 July

Born; towards the hour of seven in the evening to Maria wife of Dr Giovanni Pullicino a son – he was given the names Filippo, Raffaele, Antonio, Giovanni. He was taken to the font by his paternal grandfather Sir Filippo Pullicino and Sig. Emm’la Bonnello his maternal grandmother.

1946 – 22 August

Born; to Maria wife of Dr Giovanni Pullicino a son – Raffaele, Agostino. The godparents were the Noble Gioacchino Attard Montaldo and Sig. Camilla Attard Montaldo.

1960 – 16 July

Died; in the Grace of Our Lord, Sir Philip Pullicino after a long illness, at the age of 74 years. He was buried the next day in the Cameria of Our Lady del Carmine in Notabile. R.I.P.*

[*Sir Philip died at home in Mdina. The Times described him the next day as

“An exceptionally talented and versatile lawyer….the son and grandson of judges…a former Attorney-General, one of His Majesty’s Judges, and for many years Legal Adviser to the Archipiscopal Curia and H.M. Forces in Malta. Educated at St. Ignatius College and the Royal University of Malta, he was called to the Bar in 1910 and entered the public service as Advocate for the Poor in 1918. Sir Philip was appointed …judge in 1928. He relinquished his Judgeship in 1929 to take up the post of Treasury Counsel and Public Prosecutor. Sir Philip..appointed Attorney General in 1937..until 1941 when he retired. He was a Member of the Executive Council and an Official Member of the council of Government in 1939. He was created Knight Bachelor in 1934. “

In the 1930’s as a personal confidante of Archbishop Michael Gonzi and Lord Strickland, he was instrumental in bringing them together to put an end to years of public confrontation between the two.]

1968 – 10 October

Died; in the Blue Sisters Hospital in San Giuliano, Emma wife of the Noble Filippo di Conti Manduca, daughter of Judge Dr Giovanni Pullicino born on 3 Marzo 1894. R.I.P.
